    Washer Outflow Spilling Out
Hi. I just moved into a duplex and have had a washing machine installed. The outflow hose has to curl up and then go into a pipe that is only about a foot long, if that, before the pipe turns into a U. When the water discharges, it comes out of the pipe. Would adding some length to the pipe help? Is there any way to reduce the speed to which the water discharges from the washer? Thanks!

Lengthening the pipe could help, but would be a lot of extra work. I'd first see if the line has a clog in it.

What kind of washing machine do you have? There was a big dialogue over a maytag washer and we found that it had a super pump that pushed too much water too quickly. The disharge receiver should be a minimum of 18" up to a maximum of 42" to meet code. If your drain is slow obviously it would need to be snaked out. You could help it by extending the discharge receiver as you asked.

You could increase the length of the stand pipe,( is it 1 1/2" or 2"?) or you could make it a closed system by adding a compression fitting,(see image) to the standpipe so nothing could spill out when the washer pump discharges. Maytag has a problem with one of their models that has too powerful a pump. Let us know if you have a Maytag Washer. Good luck, Tom
