I have a four-five month old kitten. When I got her she was two months old and had already been fixed. Now there is a lump where her incision was. The lump is not hard and there is nothing seeping out of it. Has anyone else had this happen to their cat? What could it be? I would just take her to the vet but I have no money right now and I'm getting worried.

There is a chance it is a staph infection, feed her a rich diet and chance are it will take care of its self, thow it may get a little messy.

What do you mean by a rich diet?

Spring for some canned food. Don't feed her too much, if you do it will just pass right threw the system.

By messy I mean when it pops it will be gross, try not to focus too much on it.

Amberj If it were infection it would have made her sick by now. She would probably have ran a fever, gotten diarrhea, had pus running out of it, or it would have been red and feverish at the incision. Are you sure the lump was not there before? Because all of the cats that I have had spayed (many) always developed a lump for a while at the site. Now I must say that 2 months later I did not check it again. My suggestion would be for you to call a vets office a tech, should be able to tell you if this is normal. If she were eating, drinking and acting like everything was normal then I would not be so worried. I would just keep an eye out and make sure that it did not grow and go from there. I noticed that you give her canned food. I hope that you are offering her dry kitten chow as well, It is good for their teeth.

I'd be a little concerned about a possible hernia (where part of the intestine pokes through a hole in the abdominal muscles). It would probably be worth a phone call to the vet, to see what they say about this being normal after spaying, although they are likely going to cover all their bases and suggest you bring the cat in.

It is normal for a knot to appear at the incision.This is how it heals most of the time.Make sure the area is not red and inflamed,which would be the first sign of infection.You may want to call you vet for reassurance,just to be on the safe side.Many times a cat may have an allergic reaction to the suture material used to close the incision,which may also be the case.Most vet's will be able to tell you over the phone if the cat needs to be seen.Good luck with your new kitten.

Thank you everyone! You've all been a big help. It has already healed though, there's still a bump. She acts fine. She's still running around like a maniac! :) I'll be making a phone call to the vet tomarrow.

Hi, I have some experience in the veterinary field and have quite a few friends that are vet techs or vets and that lump is probably normal scar tissue. Unless it continues to get larger, causes your cat pain, get red, or seep some type of fluid, don't worry about it. My puppy was recently fixed and she has three little keloids (rounded scar tissue lumps) along her incision line. My older dogs also have similar scar tissue lumps and they are 4 years old and 12 years old. I wouldn't worry in the least bit.
