    new shower tray drain is on floor joist---yikes?
    Hi all, am pretty handy but currently could use some advice. A new rectangular shower kit arrived, glass doors, tray and all but upon lining the tray up to the studs, cutting the floor
    below to refit the drain and its trap I find the shower tray drain lines up exactly on the top of a floor joist. House is about 19 years old and in very good shape. Plan at this time is
    since the shower kit has been bought that I extend the short wall of the rectangle for the shower about 2 1/2" buy building up that wall with 2 x 4's on their side and then adding
    another layer of greenboard. Is there a better idea? Thanks in advance, Ron in MD.
    If it matters, the shower is going into a 2nd floor small bathroom. It is replacing a low
    cost shower kit we had installed by a contractor about 10 years ago and the drains are
    different.

    Depending on the size of the floor joist and the span, you may be able to 'cut and head' this joist. Talk to a carpenter about this.
