My Mother, who is elderly and lives very, very far from me, has a severe plumbing problem in the shower/bath- evidently the pipes are leaking behind the wall.

I am encouraging her to call a plumber but she is afraid the they might over charge.

Can any one give me advice on:
Replacing the old plumbing w/PVC - there is a small acces panel in a closet behind the bathroom- I expect it would be better to attack through the shower wall? What is a reasonable price range (Mid atlantic region)?

Then replacing the shower w/a surround or new tiles.

In Florida, for replacing with cpvc, I quoted $150 a drop to repipe a home. In ga I quote $200 a drop. A drop is a line. The sink has hot and cold therefore is 2 drops. A toilet or icemaker or outside faucet has 1 drop. In an older home it is likely to have galvanized piping. Repiping is the best thing. Replacing a piece here and a piece there is going to be much more costly.

Hi,
If it's a severe plumbing problem, you should contact your nearest plumber right away. For starters you don't want mould growth. You don't want to create further damage than what has already happened. I suggest you contact your insurance, they will have a qualified contractor to come in and inspect and access your damages.
