I am about to install a new dishwasher and garbage disposal.

All of the instructions I can find on the internet indicate that the waste hose from the dishwasher attaches to the garbage disposal, and that the waste hose from the garbage disposal then attaches to the house's waste drainage system (via a Y-shaped connector).

Here's my question: why not have TWO Y-shaped connectors (one for the dishwasher and one for the garbage disposal)? I'm going to be replacing the PVC piping anyway, so it's not going to be extra effort.

How come you can't just attach the waste hose from the dishwasher to the disposal, and be done with it?

I could do that, yes. But I don't want extra water running through the garbage disposal UNLESS it's necessary. Why? Just because it's another possible point of failure.

Why can't they be separate? Is there a Reason other than "that's the way it's always been done"? Seriously, I BELIEVE that it's historic: people with dishwashers could install a garbage disposer without too much additional plumbing.

But I could EASILY be wrong - hence the question.

I'd say as to why they can't be separate is because, yah that's how it's always been done, but it is also much more simple to do.

Well, I do know that they make a tail piece that has an small opening near the top at a 45 degree angle. Is it a double or single sink?

If it's a double, you can attach the waste hose from the dishwasher to the that tail piece, and have the tail-piece on the 'non' disposal side of the sink.

You will connect a wye on the wall stub-out to pick up both tubs.
You will install the disposal unit on a separate trap leaving the knock out plug in place. After installing a air-gap or a high loop on the hose it will connect to the other tub using a branch tailpiece,(see image) that connects to a second trap. Good luck, Tom

I have a dual tub sink, installing dishwasher and garbage disposal. Am trying to get all pipes lined up. The waste from GD is curved down. I don't know what to get for that to connect to the other tub out main waste.

I have a dual tub sink, installing dishwasher and garbage disposal. Am trying to get all pipes lined up. The waste from GD is curved down. I dont know what to get for that to connect to the other tub out main waste.

You may connect the dish washer in one of two places. 1) Connect to the desposal after you knock out the plug,**or** 2) you may connect to the sink using a branch tailpiece,(see image). Your choice! Don't forget to run a air gap or a high loop on the DW hose. Good luck, Tom

My advice: Connect D/W to G/D outlet. (don't forget to remove the knock-out). Plug the other Y.
