It depends how long you leave him in the crate. If you leave him for a long time, well you got to go when you got to go, so it would not really be his fault. Dogs are social animals and should not be left in cages for long periods they enjoy being with people and other animals. How long is your dog left in the cage?

Ajae, Happylady has a point. How old is your dog? How often are you giving potty breaks? What have you done regarding training? We need more detail as to what exactly is going on, when is she peeing, when is she barking, what are the circumstances surrounding both behaviors, so we can give you specific direction.

He is a year old. We only put him in the cage when we go to sleep. I walk him right before he goes in. It's been about 3 1/2 weeks he can bark for a half hour stop then back at it. I cover the windows so no light get in the room. Toy, bones,. what can I do

Try placing a covering over the cage. Something he can't pull through the wires. You also need to ignore him completely. It is going to take time for him to adjust to this new wrinkle in his life. Every time you respond to him, you are putting him in control. It sounds very much like you are experiencing leadership problems. Labman is not around this weekend, so I am sure he will forgive me for posting his leadership information here, rather than write one up of my own. It is very effective.

Ajae honey, you need to keep any follow up questions on your original post, and not through PMs. It is one of those unwritten rules here. So, I am posting your PM to me here:

"Too dark" isn't an issue. The problem is, from what I am gathering from your original post, is that you have suddenly changed the sleeping rules on him 3 1/2 weeks ago and started crating him at night. You might want to consider placing his crate in another room, far enough away from the bedroom so that it won't disturb you. He will eventually settle down. But, you need to apply the leadership techniques at all times, that means during the daytime too, because you are allowing your dog to rule the house. Until you take on that role and set limits on your dog (not allowing her to jump up, or paying attention to her every time she is requesting it, instead of when you have decided to pay attention to her, when you decide that it is time for play, or walks) the barking and peeing at night will continue.

    Dogs learn by association so
The best tip I've heard to stop persistent barking (odd though it may sound) is to fill a plastic container/jar with pebbles (or anything that would make a loud unpleasant noise) and every time he starts barking shake the container vigorously.. this should startle him and eventually he will think twice before barking!
As for peeing in his crate.. when we bought our Yorkie puppy we put newspaper down by the backdoor so she knew where to head for and gradually starting putting the newspaper on the backdoor step, then fully outside.
There are bound to be accidents, try not to make a big fuss when this happens but the older he gets the harder it will be to sort out.
Its best to try and determine a routine and give him lots of praise and treats when he does go outside,
    Hope this helps
    :)
