    Transmission Problems
I want to know if anyone knows whether a 1984 T-bird with a 5.0 AOD transmission has a electrical component that causes it to shift. Last night the transmission was working fine all the way home. Never had anysigns of problems. Shut off the car last night after work and this morning it will not come out of first gear. I have serviced the transmission regularly and it is full of fluid. It has a cooler on it as well. It has never slipped or hesitated between shift. It has a shift kit installed and only 80,000 miles on it. Any help other then just replacing it??

Does the shifter feel "normal?" You may have dropped the linkage. Take a peek under the car, just rearward of the front tire, you may see it hanging.

Let us know. And good luck.

No, I did not loose the linkage. The car Goes into park and reverse just fine. It acts as if it wants to go into second and one time it did but I had to reb it real high. I thinking that it just failed completely. Any othe ideas are welcome.

Sorry. You're going to need a qualified ASE certified transmission shop.

Or, perhaps there's a salvage/junk yard nearby? That has classics...

But you're not out of options there. There are many companies that sell what's called a Reman ( short for remanufactured ). Some remans are actually better than OE because they've worked out the original problems, if any. The first name that comes to my mind is Jasper. I'd go to their website to, hopefully, find an installer near you.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I have already checked out the Reman and can get one for 990.00 w/a 3yr unlimited mileage warranty. That is the way to go, since by the time a transmission shop get done taking the old one out and telling me what's wrong with it and then puts it in, I will have spend over that much. I can put it in. I put in the last one.
