"losing" CDRW & DVDRW drives
It's happened with 2 or 3 machines. I even had a tech come & get them going. I also took it to a sho who got them going. But inevitably, the very next time I try to use them, neither drive works. Err msgs: ' insert a disk, etc' and 'drive not available' and 'drive not accessible' & probably 2 or 3 other standard err messages. No one can figure out how they can get them going but the machine seems to 'lose' them. Diagnostics always seem to return 'working properly.' I always check the BIOS, and nothing looks wrong to me, but I'm not an expert. I've tried different drives, also. Same problem. How can this happen with more than 1 machine, and several different drives? Unless... I usually run XP... Hmmm. One does have 2000 Pro, though... Please help.

Do you have proper drivers installed? Check: right-click on my computer > select hardware tab > select device manager > Check whether there is a yellow question mark icon in the list.
If there is, Go to driverguide website and download the drivers >>

If you have another question, please start your own thread with it.
VNDK8TR:
Are you using the same type of motherboard in all three machines? Or are you using expansion cards to connect the drives? If so, it may be a problem with the drive controllers.

Different motherboards, thanks for the astute query. But I will tell you that different techs have gotten the drives to both work... for a brief time. Then my machine loses at least one. My Roxio software finds D drive but not E. Machine diagnostics show that both drives are working properly, no question marks. I installed the 2 drives I use now, but one machine came with both drives installed by the retailer. Same story. Are you talking about hardware controller? Thanks again.

Either the hardware controller for the drives (I'm assuming they're IDE), or the drivers for them in windows. If you can see all the drives in the BIOS, then it's most likely not a hardware issue.
If your CD burning program installs it's own drivers for ATAPI(?), that could be doing it also... I had problems with that in the past (I THINK it was atapi anyway... it was a while ago). Try uninstalling the burning programs, and see if the drives show up. Uninstalling the programs doesn't guarantee that the drivers will be uninstalled with it, but it may help.

2002 Ford Explorer.
If I put it in "3" instead of Drive, it's in 3rd even from startup. Is this normal?
I was thinking that if I have it in 3rd, then 3rd would be the maximum... that is, that it would start in 1, then go to 2 and 3 but not higher.
Thanks!
