To be honest is to. What?
This is bound to spark an interesting discussion( Or, at least, get people talking.)

    Honesty is the best policy.

Yeah... Uh, what if someone argues by talking about a situation where lying saved people?

Yes, honesty is the best policy. Even if the truth hurts, it is far better to know the truth, rather than to be deluded and find out, down the road, that you had put faith in some mendacious story.

One can always find an argument for telling a lie and be justified for it. Look at politics. How can that EVER be justified?

I don't know: It has something to do with " Gustapo". In the past, someone asked " Where are they( Jews, German people, I can't remember!)? Someone lied. If someone told the truth, a lot of people would've died.

Well, there are many examples: rape victims lying to a rapist to avoid being killed, or when Miep lied to protect Anne Frank's family from the Nazis.

I am not sure how I feel about lying. If it is lying to hide the fact that you did something bad and hate getting caught, then it is bad. If it is lying to make your wife feel better even if her butt really does look huge in those jeans, then lying is not all that bad, but not good in the long run. If you are lying to keep the Frank family from being carted off by the Nazis, then lying is noble and even good.

    Yeah...

Can we say honesty is the best policy but not always the best choice?

First let me say Goldie, I LOVE your attitude on all of the posts you have posted so far, you sound like my kind of woman!

Now, personally, I don't consider what you said above lying. To me this is a form of self-preservation. Protection if you will.

Now, to me lying is "the dog ate my homework" kind of thing. That is simply wrong and is not tolerated.

Telling a spouse that you are not cheating, when in fact you are... etc. That to me is lying.

True, there can be a noble reason for lying, as in the case of hiding people who are set for extermination camps. How often does that happen? It would be great if it never happened again but I am sure there are places in the world where it does still go on. I guess in those circumstances you have to ask yourself who's law you are obeying, man's law or God's law.

My ex used to lie to his Mother all the time about her cooking. Wuld say it tasted great and say how I should learn how to make what she made and I would look funny at him, as in, "what????" So I would ask for the recipe and make it and he would start in on how he never meant what he said to his Mom, he just said it to make her feel better. Here he had me believing he really liked over browned pork chops and extra crispy eggplant. Lol.

The only kind of lying I like is lying to save another
I don't like white lies. Id rather know where I stand, criticism is good if its true and if you take it as advice!
"you are really annoying" to me, means "hey buddy, youd really benefit from being less silly and being nicer to people, then people will like you more"
    And etc etc
I don't like to have friends who are only my friend out of pity or because they feel obliged to be nice to me, I want my friends to want to know me for selfish reasons, because they actually enjoy being around me and actually like me, not because they are just being nice.
