Hello,

I have an issue with a Stanadyne shower fixture. It's a single control knob and a faucet with diverter for directing water into the tub / shower head fixture. Recently the unit has begun to malfunction in that as much water appears to stream from the faucet as from the sower head even with the diverter pulled up (so water should be only coming from the shower head).

Per an old post on this form, I looked for an Allen set screw.. but there is none (but I do have a small rectangular opening where one should be! I have another similar fixture in another bath and confirmed that I was able to remove the set screw and then twist the faucet off the pipe without issue.

However this unit in question will not twist at all and I am fearful of damaging a pipe and causing a much more significant issue!

The unit appears to be chrome over plastic and I'm getting tempted to take a hack saw to it to simply get the malfunctioning unit off so I can replace it.

Any suggestions on how I might remove the faucet would be deeply appreciated.

Get down and look underneath the spout at the square opening. Bet you're going to find a set screw up there. There are two types of diverter spouts. Chrome finish over high impact plastic,( that's the ones with the set screw) and chrome over brass threaded metal ones. They have no little square hole with a set screw but instead screw on to a brass nipple. You have described a slip on diverter spout with a set screw. I'm going to put up the diffenent types of spouts for you to check out. Although the slip on doesn't have the pull up knob it mounts the same. Good luck, Tom

I'm not certain if it makes a difference or not, but unit does have the pull up knob as you depict in the upper diagram, though the knob is much closer to the end of the faucet than in the above diagram. Perhaps it once had a set screw (The home is ~18 years old and I bought it ~7 years ago), but there is no screw there now. When I cram my finger up into the opening all I feel is the copper pipe itself (I think). It's pretty tough to get up under it as the lip of the tub extends out under the faucet just enough to prohibit a direct view... though it looks like a copper pipe that I am seeing.

So I am assuming that I have a unit that is threaded on and needs to be unscrewed.. if only it would turn. I gave it everything short of clamping it with a wrench.. for fear of damaging the pipes and causing an even bigger mess! Any suggestions on a way to free this beast up?

Put a wrench on the spout and turn it counterclockwise bottoms up and tell me what's up in that little square. Trust me! A threaded spout doesn't have a square on the bottom. Regards, Tom
