    Jumping dachshound
    Hi
I have a dachshound pup and when I was researching to buy one, all the breeders said they can't jump... that I would need ramps up stairs and onto chairs and all things.

I now have the dog an have for 9 months and this dog is a jack in the box! She jumps on everything, into the back of the car ono my bed, over baby barriers(approx70-80 cm high) and rips up and down stairs like a mad thing. She doesn't show any signs of pain and to be truthfull I don't think I could stop the little devil!

I don't know if this is going to cause problems in the long run though, we live on a farm, so she's Extremely fit, she goes for 10 km runs with the bigger dogs and isn't at all fat, but I just don't know  :(

    Please help!

    Xx

1 of my sisters has 3 one of them is around 13 they are also on farms. They do not have weight issues either and no other problems. The 13 year old has been snake bitten a few times but they got him to the vet in time. These dogs are great hunters of small game... they are not taken hunting and are pets but this is what they like to do. I have another sister that has the 13 year olds litter mate, with the exception of having 4 of his teeeth removed he is in excellent health. He shares his home wth dogs ranging from terriers to border collies, horses and a barn full of cats. He also lives on a farm. A long as you keep her active and her at the correct weight for her body type she should be just fine. :)

I already beat up on breed descriptions in one thread tonight. Did the breeders say they won't jump, or shouldn't jump? I would do everything I could to discourage it from jumping, providing ramps and so forth. It may do less jumping as it ages. Just do what you can. You may not be able to keep it from jumping, but you can provide ways of avoiding it. Running an jumping are hard on a growing puppy's joints, but there is only so much you can do to discourage it.

Here is a link to better help you to judge its weight, LongLiveYourDog.com - Life Span Study - Rate Your Dog It would be good to have the vet confirm your opinion when you are in, perhaps at a year old.
