Colouring hair during pregnancy
Hi, I was wondering what people thought of highlighting hair during pregnancy. I am 32 weeks pregnant and yes I know haven't got long to go till the end.. but my roots are getting really bad and my hair dresser said highlighting the hair with bleech wouldn't harm my baby as the bleech doesnt/shouldnt touch the scalp when highlights are put in!

This isn't going to help you much, but I did color my hair (bleach it) in late pregnancy and my hair turned a lovely shade of green. The worst part was that I had to travel the next morning... so had to wear a toque. The hairdresser (later) said it was due to the chemical changes (pregnancy) in my body... go ahead, BUT have a toque handy & a hairdresser for backup,

I'm a bloke, and just the thought of doing that makes me cringe!
After 32 weeks of protecting and caring for something, why would you want to risk it on something so cosmetic now?
Surely it's not SO bad that it can't wait a little while!
I'm sure most people will be looking at your beautiful bump and not the colour of your hair anyway!

I was always told the biggest reaosn for not dying or bleaching hair suring pregnancy is because the colors don't work well, not because of damage to the baby. I have dyed my hair during two of my pregnancies with no ill effects. Of course best to make sure it is done in a very well ventilated room, and yes be prepared for it not working. If you are concerned about the risks to baby's health, you could have a chat with your dr.

The results on whether it is safe to dye your hair or not while pregnant are still unknown. Really it all comes down to what your doctor says. Some say absolutely not, some say it is safe in moderation. I would suggest that you just wait. Its not really worth taking the chance is it? Just 2 more months and then you will be free to dye your hair as much as you want, without having to worry over the effects it may have on your baby. I dyed my hair when I was about 4 months pregnant and I stressed over it the rest of the time, wondering if it had harmed my baby. (with my first son) not to mention that the pregnancy hormones in your body will cause the way your hair reacts to the dye to be very different then it normally would. I tried to do my own hair and it turned this funky color that reminded me of that "hi- c" drink. I then had to go to a salon and have it colored again, because it was too awful to not do. So just wait. You'll be glad you did.

My doctor told me it was fine to do. She said it wasn't so much the chemicals getting into your system that was the problem, but breathing in the fumes. She says as long as you are in a well ventilated area, you will be fine. I did it with 2 of my pregnancies and they were fine.

Definitely make sure you are in a well ventilated area. Highlights don't touch the scalp, so the chemicals don't get into your skin. I've known many women that have had there hair colored during pregnancy with no ill effects. If you have it done just make sure you let your stylist know (as if they can't tell) so they can be prepared if your hair doesn't take the color properly the first time. My doc told me I could color away, just don't get a perm. I try to go in moderation, so I end up with some pretty good roots between colorings. So far my pregnancy is normal and healthy. It's completely a personal decision with advice from your doc.
