    1. Insert the windows OS disc

    2. Plug in your external hard drive

    2. Change the boot sequence, to boot from CD/DVD-ROM

    3. Select the correct hard drive, NB make sure that it is the correct hard drive

    4. Start installing the OS...

If anyone has a better suggestion follow their procedure!

It won't work. Windows NEEDS to be on a C:\. Also every time you'll plug it in to a diff computer the hardware would be different. Plus you'd never get an IP assigned to you so no internet or network resources. It's a good thing that this won't work because it would be a small for network admins.

Some versions of Windows (XP for example) do not need to be on the C drive. However, not all PCs or external drives can be setup as bootable from the external drive. You also have the hardware issue that Need mentioned.

I would suggest getting a laptop rather than this scheme.

Have a read at this url, from Microsoft. It is a very long-winded read, but maybe it might help:

Archive: USB Storage - FAQ for Driver and Hardware Developers

    From a personal view point,installing XP,or Vista,on a USB Pen/External drive,and carrying it around,and pluging it in to a terminal of your choice (family,friend,college,work) is a recipe for disaster.Even if it worked?-two versions of Windows,on one machine... (licence,ethics,etc,not withstanding),what if your USB Windows,had a corrupt file,and messed up someone else's system.I would be gutted.Also,what Need,and Scott have said,is correct.
