    95 Mazda 929 won't crank or start
I have a 95 929. Its been really good to me up until last week. It'd been acting like it had weak juice, not wanting to start right away, especially if I ran the ac before I cut it off. Last Friday I start it in the morning and after a few worrisome secounds it started up. After work, same thing. That evening, not a full 45 secounds after I cut it off, it wouldn't start. Had it towed to my house. As I'm from the old school (wont start= batt. Or starter) I replaced the starter. But to no avail. So this is where I stand. Starters fine, and so is the relay, as I don't take new parts back off. Voltage seems to be getting to the starter, 12 at the starter post. And all the elects. Work fine. I think it's the n.s.s. but have spent enuff until I get a secound opinion. HELP!!

Always start in these situations by hooking your battery up to a charger. Then, you can rule out the possibility of a bad battery up front. See if this helps:

All but #6 w/ the s term. Can't try that right now as I'm at work, but I will when I get home. I do believe that supports my theory about the nss, so its what ill try next. Any other suggestions. I'll try anything you tell me. I am a mechanic, so I have the capability to do more complicated suggestions, I just really suck at the diagnostic end. Thanks for your help so far, I look forward to your response.

Have you used a test light or multimeter to check all under-dash and under-hood fuses?
If you have, it looks like either a bad ignition switch of a neutral start switch. I'd pull the ignition switch and check it and the harness out first.

I will try that, thanks. That reminds me of a couple things I forgot to mention. I don't know if its normal as I never paid attention to until there was a problem, but all the console lamps (less 1 ill get to in a secound) act light up like normal until I turn it to start and they all die. Also the hold light is flashing wich seems to indicate a trans problem. Is there anything else in the ignition system besides the nss that would cause this?

Sounds more and more like an ignition switch problem, to me. I would just buy another one and install it. I'm not sure what a "hold light" is. One last thought--have you checked the starter relay? Here's what it looks like:

You, that was the secound thing. I'm a little broke ryt now, any way of bypassing it to find out. As for the hold light, here is a reply to another person regarding it, wich is what causes me to suspect the nss. Mazda Repair: No Start - MPV .

Read this piece on ATX interlock systems:

It might just be an adjustment issue with the automatic transmission gear position switch.

OK, I will try that as well. You have been very helpful. I will take all the advice you have to offer. Modern cars are a pane in the ***. Remember when not starting meant either juice or starter, I miss those days
