What brand of engine is this?
Hi, I need help identifying the brand of engine that is in my old Craftsman riding mower. The mower itself is a 10 HP, 5 speed, with a 38" deck. The mower model number is 917.254230. The engine is a 4 cycle electronic ignition, and I found the following numbers stamped on the engine cover:

    143 366192 SER 6118C

    Thanks!

The sears site shows it as a 11hp briggs, If it is a 10HP it is probably a Tecumseh. If it is the old gray mower and has a rectangular air filter with plastic cover it will be the Tecumseh.

    Thanks, Don.

I think you're right. I think it's a Tecumseh. I had trouble making sense of the number stamped into the engine cover, but I finally found a website that shows the codes that Sears uses to represent different manufacturers. The 143 at the beginning of the number does stand for Tecumseh.
