Contracting to have a fence installed in E TN
I am contracting to have a fence installed in our yard & have some questions. (I have spoken to two different companies and am getting conflicting info. I want to know if a Cedar fence will rot quickly if it is touching the ground. I would also like to know how long a Cedar fence last compared to a pine fence.
    Thank you for your time

If you are going to install a wooden fence... the two primary types are REDWOOD or CEDAR. There are new composite products that are available that provide exceptional durability and are pretty much "maintenance free" but they are pretty expensive. I don't know what your goal might be for the new fence but concrete fencing has become real popular. If your concern is the durability of the material that is in contact with the ground, you can also consider wooden fence panels that use metal fence posts. There are new options available for that method and design at Home Depot or Lowe's stores.

What exactly is the conflicting info? All wood will eventually rot including pressure treated, its just a matter of how long and how much you are willing to spend. PT will last the longest but not all PT is intended to be underground or direct contact. Grade and Quality Marks for Pressure-Treated Lumber | Southern Pine Council™ | 1-504-443-4464

I am unclear what you are saying here "well there might not be i was giving my app" I agree that PT is going to last the longest but not all PT is intended for ground contact. Marlett needs to know this so he/she can compare one bid to another. Cedar and redwood resist rot but they are not rot proof, nor is PT.

I was say I was just giving my appion on the whole thing really to be honest the costmer has to decide if they are willing to pay the price for the ceader it all depends on what buget they are on ;)
