Hi...

Just bought a house and the basement is not level. What can be done to create a level floor ready for carpeting. How much with labour and material would it cost?

Can't give you any idea about the cost. Don't know where you live. I have seen it where people have torn out there basement floor and shot the debris out of the basement on some kind of conveyor belt device.

It's a hard problem to solve, is the short answer. I'm doing this very thing, along with a large water-problem solution in my basement. For me, the solution is complete removal of the concrete floor, and pouring of a new floor.

If your basement has adequate height, you might be able to pour "self-leveling" cement in the low area. This cement is stable at thin depths. You might be able to level the whole thing out a bit. For a really smooth surface, you could even add a layer of subflooring plywood on top of that (again, if you have the head room).

I don't have the head room to do all this, so I have to jackhammer and dig. It's a big, expensive mess!

Basement floors are designed not to be level so any water would follow the path to the low side for drainage. You need french drains installed if you want level floor, or maybe you don't get any water in your basement
