Won't eat and Cries all night
My roommates and I recently got an 8 week old kitten from some neighbors. She is very cute, but we are worried that something might be wrong with her. We have all never had a kitten before. Our kitten won't eat the food that we bought her. (the only thing that we have gotten her to "eat" is some milk that we warmed up) She also cries at night for long periods. I would guess that she goes on for over 30 minute periods and does that for about half the night. I have tried to bring her in my bed with me and pet her... but that really doesn't calm her down and she continues to cry. Is there anything I can do? Is this normal?

Have you been feeding the cat the same brand of food that the neighbors had?

If you haven't done so already, take kitten in for a vet checkup... :) It's possible she's got worms or another medical problem that the vet will be able to help her with.

Are you feeding moist food or dry food? New kittens like yours can't crunch dry food, so if you aren't feeding moist food, soak the dry food and then break it up into small moist chunks she can eat. If you are feeding moist food, check the quality - I know my last kitten would always thow-up the fatty chunks of the food after eating.

Your kitten is probably very sad at being torn away from her Momma. Spend as much time as possible with her - talk softly to her, hold her close, and play gently with her. It's not unusual at all for her to be stressed at being moved into a new home with all new smells and noises.

Stop the milk and don't give again if you are giving "people" milk! It's not good for them and either will cause hard stools or diarrhea! It really sounds like she's too young... only feed a decent dry kitten chow, period. You may let it soften with water and heat it just a tad to relase aroma. Never feed wet food-only use if the little guy has to take meds as a treat to insure he/she will take it. Is the kitty having normal bowel movements? Off the top of my head: too young, irritable bowel, constipation and/or diarrhea, hunger and lonliness for mom. Young kittens are always very vocal at first-huge trauma to have all these new things to adjust to. See your vet and follow his advice!
