    20 amps 30 amps
I have a Generac SVP-5000 Portable Generator. I am preparing for the storm season and need to buy some durable extension cords. I have two connections on my generator, a 30 amp/120 volt connection and a 20 amp 120/240 connection. I know nothing about amps.

Do I need to buy an extension cords for both connections? What appliances would connect with the 30 amp/120 volt... and what would connect with the 20 amp 120/240. Also, what's the maximum length on these cords should I use. Thanks in advance.

The provided outlets are the maximum that can be connected, so the 30 amp 10 volt can be used for anything from a 15, 20 or 30 amp circuit. This could be for the frig, or oil burner. The 20 amp 120/240 volt can be used for a water pump. So you may need to create a adapter to plug a 15 or 20 amp plug into the 30 amp outlet.

Without getting into load amps and voltage drop, best to keep any cord as short as possible, with the maximum length of assembled cord available being your guide. A 20 amp cord will probably only be 50 feet at the most. One little know fact is never use a cord while it is still wrapped or coiled up, always stretch out the cord.

But very important to keep the generator completely outdoors when running. Too many people have been overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning by running their generator in the garage or basement.
