    Media and the downside/upside
Did someone start a discussion about whether the media is good? Did I post this in the wrong section?

Bummer, I'm not finding them. I could have sworn there were two that were very similarly worded.

Hang tight, maybe one of our sleuths will come along with a link.

Who's Rush Limprod? I've been searching him online. The only thing I know about him is that he's a rich person.

Hammy, try Rush Limbaugh. Excon was mangling his name (on purpose).

That explains it. Thanks. But why would excon change Rush's name to Rush Limprod?

Hammy I have gotten to know your personality pretty well, and I was afraid you might ask that question.

Honey, as I have told you before, I love your curiosity and interest in learning about everything. I will always try to help you whenever I can. But sometimes it is better to leave some questions unanswered. Let's just say it is an adult reference and leave it at that. Okay? I don't think your parents would appreciate strangers on a web site giving you too much information. Trust me, for now, it is best to leave this one alone.

Okay, I'll take your advice for now. Let's get back to the media discussion: What's YOUR opinion on the media?

Boy, honey that is a whole can of worms there.

I hold those reporters that do a responsible job, checking their facts and reporting the news, in high regards. Other than that, I have a problem with most of them. I don't have any interest in what entertainers do. If those magazines and entertainment channels had to depend on me to earn a living, they wouldn't last a second. I have a problem with those people (such as the two mentioned above) who spout their opinions all over the place. I don't care about what they think. I just want to know what is going on in the world. I want facts, not speculation, lies, or opinions.

So, I guess you can say that I am not a big fan of the "media", in that I question how the majority conduct themselves. Their irresponsibility can damage careers.

First of all, "the media" is not one thing. There's TV, radio, print in all its diversity, and of course the internet in its even more mind-boggling diversity. So the question "is the media good?" is impossible to answer in a meaningful way. I will say that it is a business, with niche markets that are served by various suppliers. The line between news and entertainment is exceedingly fuzzy and getting fuzzier by the year.

Whatever you see that shows up repeatedly and consistently, you can bet that there is a demand for it, because if they run something up the flagpole and nobody (or too few to be interesting to advertisers) pays any attention, they get rid of it and try something else. I do believe that it's primarily a demand-driven industry, so the most powerful thing you can do to combat things that offend you in the media is turn it off, don't buy it, don't watch it, don't buy the products advertised on it, don't listen to it, don't discuss it, don't rant and rail against it or give it any of your energy or attention.

Why can't we say the media is good because of its positive influences, besides the fact that it has negative influences?

Thanks for the reminder, I already understand what makes up the media. I might have misunderstood, though...

Hammy, as you can see OrdinaryGuy is anything but ordinary, In my opinion. He always presents a very keen insight into whatever topic he chooses to post. I absolutely agree with him here. I didn't go back to the original question when you responded to my post.

So, yes, I suppose we could say that the media is good for it's positive influences. You also can say it is good in that it is an absolutely perfect example of freedom of speech, which is part of the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Without freedom of speech, we would be another culture whose information is limited due to government control. Look at China as an example in which information deemed detrimental by the government is withheld. With the advent of the internet and access to more and more information on a daily basis, their government is now actively trying to figure out how to control and block what they consider "propaganda", information deemed subversive by the government, to their people.

I agree. It seems there's media all around us. This post is a form of media! This website is part of media!

I make it a passion to rate the media and it comes up stinking, rotten and managed! I refuse to read magazines, newspapers or watch TV because it is all financed by the corporate media people who want you to think and buy what they want you too! The news media outright lies and omits 99 percent of what is really going on in the world. If you own a computer you have no excuse for finding out what is really happening and it is not good! Bush sees to it that this continues because he does not like dissent.
