Father wants to sign over rights in FL
My son's father keeps threating to sign over his rights, he said he does not need my permission and I can't stop him. He only wants to do this because he has just gotten a job and now has to pay. We have not received anything from him in almost a year, can he really do this and can I do anything to get help with the child's needs?

He can't just sign away his rights because "he wants to!" For him to give up rights someone else has to be there to adopt your son also. My son's biological dad signed his rights away after he got $5000 behind in child support, but my husband was already wanting to adopt my son.

He sounds like a selfish, greedy individual that needs his butt dragged to court for child support! There should be a local child support enforcement service in your area if you can't afford a lawyer. Call the county attorney's office and ask for help with child support. I know that it is a pain in the tale to try to squeeze money out a low life, but you have to enforce it! Not only for you and your child's needs, but to show the "father" and your son that you just don't quit when it gets hard! You will teach both of them that life has consequences and responsibilities that you can't avoid or ignore, because you "don't want to." If he doesn't pay... Don't be afraid to send him to jail! If you don't pay the electric bill, you sit in the dark. If you don't pay your insurance bill, you get a ticket. If you don't help pay for your child's needs, YOU GO TO JAIL!!

Be strong! I know it is hard, so hang in there. It will get better!

Ok, he can make application to the family court to sign over his RIGHTS anytime he wants, But signing over his rights has nothing, not a single thing to do with paying child support or furnishing health insurance.
Those are obligations, and he has to pay child support even if he signs over his right. The only way he would get out of paying support is if you get a new partner and they want to adopt.

So when he says this again, laught at him and tell him not only is he a bad father, a dead beat dad, he is just stupid and does not know the law at all.

Would there be 1000's in prison toight if they could just sign that away ?

You turn him into your states child enforcement people, take him back to court and get a new amount set with back payments to be garnished from his pay.
