    Could I still be pregnant
I'm about 17 days late for my period. I have symptoms of pregnancy - weight gain, nausea, increased discharge, headaches, etc. Both urine and blood tests came back negative as to me being pregnant. Is it possible to have a negative blood test and still be pregnant?

Do you normally have irregular periods? How long ago did you have the test done?

I had the blood test done yesterday -- it was negative. Has anyone received a negative blood test and discovered later on that they were in fact pregnant.

In rare situations you can get a negative on a blood test and still be pregnant. You may want to wait another couple of weeks and see if you get your period. If you don't I would suggest another blood test. If that still comes back negative you could get an ultrasound. Missing your period doesn't always mean that you are pregnant, even if you are having "pregnancy like" symptoms. Those symptoms could be caused by any other number of things. I missed a period and had the nausea, headaches, etc and I was not pregnant. My doctor told me that the average woman has 11-13 cycles per year, and sometimes you just miss one. Sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear. Just remember that for some women it takes longer for the pregnancy hormone to build up. It's not common, but it does happen. Other than a positive blood test the only way you could be certain is to have an ultrsound. I would just wait it out and see if you get your expected next period.

The qualatative blood tests are more accurate then hpts, HOWEVER, not perfect. They (like hpts) only give a positive or negative read out. Therefore, if your hcg levels still aren't high enough to register, then it will come out negative, even if you are pregnant. Its very possible that you could be pregnant, but also that you aren't, and there are other reasons for your period to be late. I once was 2 months late for my period, thought for sure the tests had to be wrong. Then I started two weeks later like clockwork.I was just stressing because we were trying hard to conceive baby number 2. It could be any number of other reasons for you. Stress, a virus, change in activity/lifestyle/diet etc. Its not uncommon to be late, or completely miss an entire cycle, and start right back like normal. Perhaps you are pregnant, perhaps this is normal for you, perhaps you will need help restarting your cycles. I would suggest seeing your doctor. They can do an exam and check for other sign of pregnancy. If they believe there is reasonable doubt, they might order a quantative blood test which is the most accurate blood test. It measures the actual number of hcg in your system, and if there is a high enough level, they will repeat the test with in a few days to see if the levels are doubling as they should in a normal pregnancy. Good luck to you.
