Homework questions
A few others and I are odd ducks I guess. We believe in homework being done by kids and checked by adults.
Here are these kids with the world and Wikipedia at their fingertips and with no research at all they post word for word the homework question, with no thoughts of their own.
Folks there are sites set up to help kids with homework, Why do you think they come here? Easy answer is at those sites THEY must produce their own thoughts.
So think about it, are you truly helping them [which is the stated purpose for this site] or hindering them?

I see your point, Savage. Many times I will put up a link for the poster, once in a great while I will answer. Like this evening with the President/Congress question.
If there was a general consensus concerning homework help and giving the answers as opposed to just offering a resource so that the poster can look for their own answer, I would gladly abide by the majority.

Lol, its hard to get a general consensus when you have so many folks that come and go.
Ever notice how many kids try to slip the questions under the radar by posting in accounting/ finance, etc.
I am betting your old enough to remember pre computer when the only resource you had was the library and you better beat the rest of your class there lol. -- Savage

Kids don't know how well they have it today! My children feel they will not survive without the internet to help them with research and I don't know if I could either? It is so easy having the world at your fingertips!

LOL. Yes - a kid was darn lucky to even have a typewriter! The teacher would give the assignment and we would hit the library. Knew how to reference and cross reference, inter library loan, article search and all that. You are right - the first one to the library got the resources. There always were those few kids who would come on Monday with their work undone, the complaint being the library was not open Sunday night! The teacher would just groan and give them an F.
Way too easy now.

Did you all read this, posted by Curlyben?
Read this first: Expectations for the Homework Help board
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do not simply retype or paste a question from your book or study material
We won't do your homework questions for you.
You were given the assignment for you to learn.
If you come up with your own answer and post it for us to critique that is within reason.
If you have some SPECIFIC questions that you couldn't find or didn't understand, we may help with that.
But this is your assignment, so show us you have at least attempted to complete it on your own.
Thank you.

Oh, God, if someone helped me with my Math for Nurses, I would probably give a fatal dose of something!! However, I have to thank one particular member, if he reads this he will know who he is, in helping me figure out fractions!! Thanks KP, you were great. But at least he made me try!!
I remember pre-calculator days, the Dewey Decimal System. And, guess what I am teaching my kids that!
No computer or calculator for them. As far as math goes, your calculator sits on your shoulders, learn how to use it. LOL

Lol I post it at times, other times I am to lazy to drag the link up for the lazy buggers. So I just tell them to do their own dang homework. [Think I will add the link to my paste it in proggie though]
Here is a adult that was just as bad though lol https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/constr...tml#post359987

It is funny, I ignore most of the science and math questions here where I actually am a ''professional'' because almost every one I open is homework. I never did mine, why should I do others'? On another web site where posters choose an expert to send their questions, they give us a range of options. Most of the science and math ones, I click on the ''I believe this is a homework question.'' button.
There are those that feed their ego by answering such questions, but I think it is irresponsible. It is like the people that want to get around restrictions on the web sites on their school computers or hack passwords. The clueless people wanting help with what I see as irresponsible breeding of dogs don't find me helpful either.
I think if you are going to set yourself up as an ''expert'' and answer questions on the net, you are obliged to discourage irresponsible behavior.

Teachers must be aware that the kids use the net. I wonder how they are dealing with it. Perhaps they even encourage it. Maybe, and this might just be wishful thinking on my part, while looking for help with homework they are actually coming across other good interesting facts.
Anyway, what have we decided? Do we give them the answer or direct them to where they can do a little research?

I know my instructors encourage us to use the internet, with the understanding that we will provide them with the link so that they may check our work. However, we are forbidden to use Wikipedia as the sources there are not always reliable for the medical field.

Could we give them hints instead? Why don't we point them to some useful resources? There are better ways to get online homework help.

If someone is truly looking for help, is making an attempt, and truly doesn't seem to understand the question, I will attempt to explain it what the teacher is looking for how to go about solving the question, and give them some links that will aid them, if appropriate. I will not give direct answers if it is apparent it is a homework question.
If someone pasts a copy of the homework assignment up without making any attempts on their own, I will apologize that I cannot answer the question due to the rules of the site and post the link to the rules in the response.

Why don't we just ban the whole thing? There are very few people who really are trying.

In effect, I have. I just don't open most questions in math and science because it is a huge waste of time to find out they are all homework.
