When does a collection agency decide to sue
    Hi,

I have run up some credit card debt that I can't pay.

A collection agency has contacted me.

The amount of the debt is about $6000.00.

Besides letters and phone calls at what point should I be worried about getting sued?

This happened to me in my youth and I pretty much blew everyone off without any adverse effects meaning I got a regular mortgage from a big bank and new credit cards after several years.

    Thanks,

    JackWolf

    How old is the debt?

After a certain point they can't sue unless a lawyer has been handling the case since the beginning and has kept the statute of limitations from expiring.

For a single debt of 6000$ they will almost certainly sue. Just get a lawyer and maybe they will settle for less. They won't wait more than a few months.

They will most likely try and collect though their collections if you are making some payments till the Statue of limitation is getting close to the end. At that point they will sue to get a judgement so they can continue to collect. If you are not working with them, they most likely will sue so they can garnish your pay check
