    Have old Saf-Aire wall gas heater, lost knob that regulates on/off.
    Do have rod that knob was attached to. Turn right or left for on??

    Does it have a pilot? Once it is on , if equipped, just try turning the rod to see if gas flows. With both of my gas log sets, you turn the knob to the left and most other gas valves open counterclockwise.
