Hi, I had a question regarding de-winterizing a potential new home owned by a bank, and previous owner may have damaged indoor fire sprinkler system. The home is currently winterized so water has been turned off. My question is can the water be turned on, and not affect the potentially damaged indoor sprinkler, or is the sprinkler connected to the water supply and when turned back on will spring a leak?

The sprinkler system will be connected to the water supply piping, BUT it should be isolated by a shutoff somewhere. Find the shut off valve for the sprinkler piping (should be labeled somewhere) and shut that before attempting to turn the water main back on.

It is definitely something a plumber can fix EXCEPT that some states now require licensed sprinkler fitters to work on these systems so you are best to call your local building department and simply ask them if a licensed sprinkler company is required here. In most states, a plumber will be all that is needed.
