Form 2555 for US citizen and US Resident Alien
Hello, I have a question concerning the foreign earned income form:
My husband and I are both living in the UK now and therefore we have to file the 2555 and 1040. If I understand this correctly we have to fill out a 2555 each but can file a 1040 jointly. What I do not understand is where the amounts go on the 1040 then. With the tax treaty anything below 99200 USD per person is not taxed, correct? But if I now add both amounts together on the 1040 where do I put that to ensure to show that it is under that amount individually ? We do not have anything additional so it is a straight forward just reporting income
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated

    Stefanie,

You CAN file a joint return. You list your wages/salary on Line #7 of Form 1040.

You then complete Forms 2555 for yourself and your husband.

Assuming all of your salary is excluded, you list the combined salary as a NEGATIVE number on Line #21 of Form 1040 with the entry Foreign Earned Income exclusion.

There are a number of pitfalls associated with such a return that are too extensive to explain here. For this reason, I recommend you pay the fees of a qualified U.S. tax professional and have the return prepared professionally.
