Hi,

I have a house with a slow draining sink. Drano has be tried but I believe the configuration of the pipes may be causing the slow drain. I think the pipe that goes into the wall is too high up. It should be level with the pipe the goes across from the U pipe. See picture below.

Does anyone agree? Can you suggest a fix? There isn't much room to raise the U pipe.

Yes it is to high. The proper fix would be to cut out the drywall and go into the wall.

It will be easy to patch up the drywall. The drywall patch doesn't have to be pretty, It will be easy to cut the PVC piping and lower the tee that the dirt arm (the pipe coming out of the wall). You can cut the PVC pipe with just about anything, hacksaw, saws all, even with a wire pipe cutter. Cut blow the existing tee or TY at the level you need. Then cut the vent pipe above the tee. Put in a new TY, then reconnect the vent with a short piece of PVC. Pipe out of the TY with a new dirt arm.

You can rebuild the dirt arm the way you have it now for convenience of snaking the drain but turn the "Y" horizontal, not out of the bottom.

Replace the trap (the part you are calling a "U" pipe" and the trap arm. I would also replace the tail pipe (the part the trap is attached to). The part above the trap will unscrew from the coupling between it and the sink.

This will work only if the drain pipe (inside the wall) goes down. If it goes horizontal you will have to do something else. Post back.
