    Dog Training
I was just wondering how long it would take a 10 month old pomeranian to learn simple commands such as sit, stay etc.

My daughter's 4-H leader used to say it took 90 hours to teach basic obedience. His point was that the kids needed to be working their dog every day, not wait until the week before the fair. If you did little else, you could do it is a week. I think most one night a week obedience classes run about 3 months. So how long depends on how hard you work on it.

I am glad you are training your Pomeranian. Too many people fail to and end up with a dog whose behavior would never to tolerated in a larger dog. Many households are run by 10 pounds of dog. Find a good book or class. As I keep saying, you can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete There are some newer books in the sticky at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251804 Many of them aren't the basic book you need.

Check out "clicker" training. Just "google " it. It really works and fast it is the same type of training they use at Sea World. I taught my dog how to wave and pray, as well as other behaviors she got the basics down in 1/2 an afternoon, then repetition sets it in the brain also read the book Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan. Good luck and have fun

I am really surprised to see a recommendation for clicker training and Cesar in the same post. While clicker training is one of the modern positive methods, he relies too much on the past negative methods.

What I see of him is not really training but more behavior modification. He often says he is not training but rehabilitating a un balanced dog. Why do you think he is negative? I have used some of his suggestion on my wild child and it has worked.

The infamous Spike and the cat where the off screen assistant hit the remote of the shock collar completely turned me on him.
