I have a carburetor problem on my 3 year old 17 HP Briggs and Stratton Troybilt lawn tractor. The float needle valve is not shutting off the gas to the carburetor reservoir. I have cleaned the carburetor and put in a new kit. I have replaced fuel line and filter. I checked the float to be sure it is does not have a hole in it.

Why is the gas from overflowing into the carburetor? What have I overlooked?

Your needle (ironically I initially misspelled this the needy valve) valve is not seating. You could have crud in it preventing it or even a damaged vavle seat. I've seen a few that have a plastic insert that could come out while cleaning, THEN you are screwed if you lose it.

I will check and get back with you. If I lost it, guess the only solution is a new carburetor.

It doesn't usually come out easy. I used compressed air (really bad idea in hindsight) on one carb plugged up with deposits from a machine I saved from someone's trash, It bounced off the wall and hit me in the face and landed in front of me on the floor or I would have never found it.

Why do I pull them from the trash? If it they have compression I can usually have then running within 15 minutes, and most of them do. I can easily afford new, but why spend money if you can get them free.
