J-1 Nonresident but has 1042-s with income code 16
    Hi,

I am J-1 research scholar. I became NR from NOV last year. I had participated in a volunteer study where I received $50 and got a 1042-S with income code 16 (independent personal services) for this study. I was going to file 1040EZ but it has no box to include this income of $50 and also no room to add $15 as tax that is withheld.

While doing 1040EZ, I can claim $16900 if I file as married and filing jointly. If I have to file 1040 or 1040A, then I will have standard deductions just $10,300. That is a huge loss.

I can't 'not-report' this income either! :( Hope someone can shed some light on this matter for me. It would be so great!

    Thanks

    -AK

You MUST file Form 1040NR-EZ, NOT 1040EZ, as you are a non-resident alien.

Filing Married Filing Jointly is NOT a legal option for you.
