    Heat strips Trane XE1200-
We live in a home with very high ceilings and have a difficult time of heating in the winter. Are the heat strips suppose to come on and off in this situation since the heat pump is not able to supply the heat needed (we use 67 in day and 65 at night)? Is it possible to add additional het strips? Thanks for your time and eply. Frank

The heat strips normally don't come on unless the temperature in the room is 2* or more below the thermostat setting. Most air handlers will handle up to either 15 or 20 kW of strip. If you want to add more strip heat, you may have to run another electriclal circuit to handle it.

    Heat pump heat strips.
Grady, thanks for your reply. I don't believe my strips are coming on unless I manually turn them on. Could the problem be the thermostat? Thanks, Frank

I don't think you have a stat problem. What is the temp outside when the heat pump can't keep up? Do you know if the heat pump is original to the house?

Not sure but almost certain it is a replacement. Last winter the heat pump could not heat our house when the temps were very low. With temps in the mid to lower 20's those strips should come on shouldn't they?I never saw the strips come on unless I manually turned them on.

In some cases the strips will come after the heat pump has exceeded a certain run time. Some heat pumps have a temperature lock out. Say 30* outside. It depends on how the system is set up.
