When we die the heart stops pumping and the cells of the brain stop working. All the energy in the body is used up as well as the oxygen. The cells start to die and your gut starts to digest your body from the inside out. Then the body is either embalmed, the rotting and decomposing is slowed down, fluids are replaced and the body is then either cremated or interned in the ground. What does our body turn into, the honest answer is fertilizer or a meal for a predator.
As for the connection between the body and the soul, that is for to discuss with your imam. There is no evidence that a soul exists or doesn't exist so it is a matter of faith and beliefs for that. What happens after death? It's an undiscovered country where no one who travels to will return from. It puzzles the mind.
I think this is a conversation you need to have with your Imam.

@Crave/Your description of 'what happens to a human body' is absolutely spot on; good description. Basically what I was going to write. (Your biology knowledge is showing).

Thanks! :-) A little factoid I heard is that it takes about two days for all the cells in the body to actually die. The spark is gone long before then but the tissue still lives until all the energy runs out Aerobic and Anaerobic.

So, rigormortis sets in and when the tissue 'dies', rigormortis ends and the body becomes pliable again. Yes ? That is the way I see it, anyway.

Kind of. It is when the cells run out of energy. Without the oxygen the cells activate pumps that would move calcium. The pumping of the calcium would release the muscle and allow for movement. So, essentially when it dies is when Rigor Mortis sets in. No more engery is available. Then when the body starts decomposing the mechanism that is holding all the muscles together is broken down and the muscles are more pliable.
This is when things start to get stinky.

Stlnky, yes, I have viewed a couple of autopsies. One was cranial, the other was torso. Not recently, but it is unforgetable.
