While I realize your post is now 3 years old I am having the same problem. I cannot find "baffle plate" in any of the diagrams I've found online. If possible, could you explain where and what the baffle plate is or possibly attach a photo so I can check mine?

I'm reasonably handy, but I need a point of reference as to what I'm looking for. I've had this mower for a long time and I'm just not ready to give up on it, yet.

Hi,
I separated your post; I get notification to any I respond to automatically. I believe the "baffle plate" referred to is in fact the throttle disc attached to the throttle shaft of the carb. On rare occasion the screws can back out and often pass through the engine. Sometimes they may get hung in a valve (usually the intake) or even get lodged between the piston and cylinder head. In a situation where the disc comes loose, there is no throttle control and the engine will seem to run wide open.
Sometimes the throttle shaft will break above the top screw and give the same indication. This can be caused by dirt ingestion, though I have seen it just happen. All can be detected by trying to lift the plate attached to the throttle shaft on the outside and above the carb. The disc will noramlly hold it secure, and missing it will allow it to lift fairly freely.
The bad news is that a new carb is the recommended fix.

Now that you mention it, the plate on the throttle shaft did seem rather loose and wobbly. I will check it out when I get home from work.
