    HVAC troubleshooting issue
Just bought a new home. The Lennox hs26-030-2p unit has worked fine for a month, but just last night stopped blowing cold air. The internal blower is fine; the problem is in the outside unit. The fan is no longer working.

The fan rotates if pushed manually (it hasn't locked up). I've hit the high pressure reset button. Afterwards the unit will hum for a minute or two (no fan rotation) before turning off again. I've noticed a small amount of dried freon on some of the coils, so apparently there is a leak. I'm assuming this is the root of the problem.

However, will the fan stop turning due to a refrigerant leak? Can you see any other causes here I am not aware of?

    Thanks for your help.

Freon doesn't "dry"... its a gas, that becomes a liquid under sufficient pressure. There is no solid state.

You have something other than that on it.

THere is a number of things that will shut it down... overpressure, under pressure, and any of a number of mechanical and electrical issues.

If it's a new home... then it should be under warranty... call someone.

While I don't consider myself to be a reigning authority on Home A/C systems... I am licensed for Automotive systems which functionally are not much different.

THere is not a lot you can do as a homeowner without knowledge and the tools of the trade beyond checking the obvious such as breakers...

Fan will continue to run regardless. Sounds like a bad capacitor.
