    Toilet
If our toilet is causing our water bill to be high can we turn the toilet off on the water shut off valve? Won't be home for 4 months. Is it OK to turn the toilet off till we get home in sept? Does it stop up sewer gases?

    Hi wtleftychick

If you are leaving for 4 months then you want to shut off your WATER MAIN into the home and either turn the thermostat on the water heater down to the pilot setting (or vacation setting IF you have a gas water heater) OR just shut off the electricity to your water heater if you have an electric water heater. In this way, and only in this way can you be sure you will not return home to any awful surprises...;)

Glad to discuss more if you like, OK?

In 4 months you may dry out a trap. Pour some 50/50 antifreeze in them and the water will not evaporate so quickly.

You can also use cooking oil in the trap, just a cup in each trap. I am surprised you are not asking how to fix the toilet, its not hard.
