    Income
Married couple file joint income taxes. The wife works . But the husbands income is from social security. Does he have to report his social security income, or should they file separately ?

Yes, he has to report his Social Security income. It may or may NOT be taxable, but it DOES have to be reported.

The only way to know for sure if they should jointly or separately is to model it BOTH ways and compare the results.

Thank you so much. I always wondered about a single person who only had social security income He has no withholding taxes. What purpose would he have to make a income tax statement?

If Social Security is the person's ONLY income, he has no requirement to file a tax return.

Social Security becomes taxable only if there is other income reported with it.

Thank you so much. I suspected that. Because there is no withholding taxes.
