Natural gas smell not rotten eggs, but a true natural gas smell emits from the hot water faucet from one sink located in a bathroom. We have several sinks and water faucets in this house the hot water heater is a brand new 50 gallon Rheem. Is there anyway gas can be coming from my hot water heater, and why wouldn't I smell this order from any of the other faucets?

There's no way gas from the heater would enter the hot water system. If that were possible every faucet would smell. Try this, Remove the aerator and turn the hot water on. Still smells? Shut the water off to the faucet and open it up. Remove the cartridge and soak it in bleach. Close off the spout and fill the valve body as well. Soak for 15 minutes, Before you reassemble just crack the hot water supply and give the water a sniff. If there's no smell then reassemble and test. Good luck, Tom

As Tom said, there is really very slim chance for NG to enter water system... But in any case - and to be on the safe side - I suggest you call your Gas Company immediately and report the problem. They will send somebody over free of charge to check it out and possibly deal with the problem. Please, do it now. Let me know what they had to say. Back to you. Milo

Please let me know what he finds. If he comes up with a connection between gas and water it will be a first for me. Milo, can you come up with a situation where gas enters the water system and then only affects one faucet?

And I would agree except only one faucet is affected. f the heater were at fault every faucet would smell. Correct? Cheers, Tom

Is it possible that the odor is coming from the lavatory overflow cavity? I've seen plenty of nasty, organic matter accumulate under the sink pop - up assembly, and perhaps the hot water is activating an odor reaction. I would suggest drawing a glass of hot water from the tap, and take it to another room before sniffing. I would also sniff around the overflow hole in the basin...
