    Black particles from my well
I have a well with a 1.5 hp pump. I recently changed most of the water lines over to 3/4 inch pex... reused some of the old 3/4 inch pex that was in the utility room. I have 3/4 coming from pump to pressure tank and then 3/4 to hot water and out to 3/4 to the kitchen and one bathroom. I reduced the 3/4 to 1/2 right before the fixtures. Before, the 3/4 was reduced to 1/2 before it left utility room. So my volume should be increased. I was at the kitchen sink this morning and noticed that when the well pump come on it produced a large amount of black specs and flakes, then gradually less the longer the water ran, but still there. Then once the pump comes on again... a bunch of black particles again... probably iron... right?. the toilet fill valve is already plugged. Thing is, if don't solve this it will be a constant battle... suggestions? A water softener is a planned addition to system, we are under renovation here

If it came from the galvanized iron pipes it would be rust colored. Do they seem hard like plastic or soft and pliable? This could be the impellers breaking up. Do you have a surface or a submersible pump? Back to you. Tom

I have the same issue: spurt of black, oily-looking water when turning on the hot water faucet in a tub, shower, or sink. It doesn't happen all the time. Our electric hot water heater was 30+ years old, so we changed it out a few days ago, but had the black water again today in the shower. We...

I never had this problem before in the 10 years we've lived here, but in both toilets, in a pattern like it sprayed out when the toilets were beginning to flush, there were fine, black particles left on the inner side of the rim of the bowl, above the jets. People tell me, that, because of Irene's...
