Shouldn't my son automatically become a citizen when I did?
I became a US Citizen in 1996. My son who was born in Trinidad, West Indies in 1977 was a green card holder at that time, shouldn't he have automatically become a citizen when I did? Thanks

No, he is a Trinadadian citizen. He needs to go through the same process. If he was born after 1996, he would be a citizen.

No, that's not how it works. He wasn't born here... and you weren't a citizen here when he was born. THerefore he is not a citizen here. He would have to make application like everyone else. But you can sponsor him.

You are probably referring to the Child Citizenship Act of 2000. If, after February 27. 2001, your child was a permanent resident, under 18, and living in the custody of a U.S. citizen parent in the U.S. the child would have automatically became a U.S. citizen. But if your child was born in 1977, he would have been over 18 (about 24) on February 27. 2001, so this does not apply.

The previous law required both parents to be citizens when the child is under 18 for a child to become a U.S. citizen automatically.
