Mental/medical facility for liver cirrhosis patient
My 33 year old son has liver cirrhosis and Hepatic encypalopathy. Where can I find a facility where he can be treated for both conditions? He is currently in a Care unit, but he sits, sleeps and eat. That's it. No stimulation or therapies of any kind. He needs somebody to explain to him the situation regarding his mental condition. When his body feels fine, he thinks he is OK to come home. He is not!! We don't have a medical aid for him, we take him to Government Hospital when needed for blood platelets. Which he needs often. He is NOT crazy. Some doctors suggested that he is send to a Psyciatric Unit. He needs a place where they can take care of his mental AND medical conditions. We live in Vanderbijlpark Gauteng

We can't suggest anything for you if you are in South Africa. This is an international site mostly based in the UK, Canada and the USA. Even then, we could not help you locate a facility.

Psyciatric Unit does not mean he is crazy, it means he may not be of rational thought and that he needs help understanding the problems he is facing.

You keep talking about programs and people to talk to him, well that is it. A normal medical facility just does medical and he will sit and sleep and that is it.

Also it can depend on how much money you can afford to pay, if you are very wealthy, there are more optoins

I understand that what you mean by not needing a psych unit is that his mental condition is from the encephalopathy, which is treatable medically. Cirrhosis however is not curable, just manageable. You need to think in terms of care at home with frequent trips to the hospital for medical treatments. There is no 'place' that I know of for him to go.

Ideally you would get him on a waiting list for a liver transplant. Meanwhile, look into careful diet. The old idea that he needs low protein is now considered to be not true, and in fact he should have a good amount of protein, along with a good healthy diet in general. And research the newest treatments. Sometimes doctors aren't current.
