Staph infection on dogs inner hind leg
Our 8 year old Pitt bull has just gone to the veterinarian. He was diagnosed with inner ear infections in both ears and a staph infection on his inner hid thigh.

My dog is not trying to lick, scratch or rub his leg on anything. He doesn't even seem to notice a rash. The veterinarian did not do a scrapping. He only examined his ears and looked briefly at his leg.

I am starting to question the accuracy of our veterinarians diagnosis.

The rash is red and raised small bumps only on his right rear inner thigh. Not bothering him. Any second opinions.

I am aware that you can not see the rash. I suppose I am looking to see if anyone has had a dog with staph and if the symptoms differ.

Also, the veterinarian did not tell me to be extra careful while the dog is infected nor did he mention any extra house hold duties or precautions I should take.

Just to add some details. He suddenly got the rash, he has had the rash for a week and at first looked like chafing, but now is small red bumps. He doesn't act like it hurts. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The only advice I can offer is if you are unhappy with your vet is to do one or a few of the following:

    1. Do nothing and stay with vet
    2. Call vet and ask your questions. If your vet won't talk to you over the phone than take the dog back in for a recheck. My vet does not charge the full office fee for rechecks.
    3. See another vet and see what they say

I don't know your pet but will say follow your gut. You know your dog. Of course if the dog worsens take him back to a vet, as I am sure you know.

Hope your dog feels better soon. It is never easy when they are ill as they can not tell us what is up.

He gets a re-check in 2 weeks. By that time he will 3/4 of the way done with his Cephalexine, completely done with his ear drops, and will have had 2 medicated soaks. I can see that he is feeling a little better already. I really appreciate you or feed back. I am going to call our vet on Monday morning to ask if I should be concerned about the staph infection spreading to my family. In the mean time, I am sad because we our keeping him isolated just as a precaution. He is such a people dog and really hates bringing separated. :( It will be especially hard today from him while we have our friends and family over the Superbowl. Go Hawks!

Hi busy momma, we are all volunteers here, just so you know. You probably had to wait because there was not an expert to answer your question when posted.

Cephalaxine is about the best to treat canine staph infection and you are probably correct in keeping him segregated for now.
