Last night the hot water in my bathroom would not come on. I figured that my pipes had frozen even though the temp in the attic did not seem cold enough for that to have occurred. I turned off the water heater and left the faucet on. Today hot water is coming through but now my shower faucet will not turn off the water. The actual faucet will turn but when it is in the off position water is still coming out of the shower head. I went back into the attic and saw no leaking water or breaks. I've turned the water off at the curb. Any thoughts?

Disassemble the valve, pull the parts and check...very likely that when the valve froze temporarily it damaged the cartridge. Most likely, you'll need a new cartridge!

So I took off the handle and the plate and now I'm stuck on what I should do next. I've looked on the net and can't seem to find this setup to figure out how to remove it. It's an older house (built in 1955) and the other fixtures are American Standard although I cannot find any markings on this faucet. Here's a picture of what I am looking at:

At this point do I need to go buy a shower valve socket or is there some secret to removing this that I can't figure out?

Is there some sort of cartridge puller (like I've seen for Moen faucets) that I need? Or should I bite the bullet and call in a professional?
