I have the rough in for the new shower location in place. I am getting ready (finally) to close the slab back up (with concrete).

The plan is make a custom shower pan (preslope- liner- mud bed) - I will check back to make sure I do that step correctly.

My question at this point in time is -should I glue the base of the (three part) shower drain to the vertical pipe and then pore the cement?

If so - should I set it to the slab height? It is about 2.5 inches deep - picture shows red line where I propose to set the drain into the slab.

This would leave a thin preslope under the liner - is this OK? Or does the mud bed need to be some minimum thickness?

If the mud bed (and/or the preslope) needs to be thicker = just how high should I set the drain.

Hi again

What kind of liner are you using? If you are using a PVC liner then you need a special drain assembly for that liner... see image below. If this is your strainer, then yes, prime/cement it in place as follows:

The bottom part of the strainer should be flush or 1/2" below the existing concrete floor and then cement the floor around that (pitching cement floor so it pitches to just below the 1st strainer part).

The preslope is done next and (if have wood floor you would lay tar paper first) then when that dries, many people lay tar paper over that (keeps cement from cutting into the liner).

Then the liner is installed over that and the top part of the strainer is installed to the lower part to lock the parts together. You should Google this or YouTube it to see that you do this correctly... can be no room for error here.

When pouring the pan floor, be sure to keep the WEEP holes in the strainer assembly free from the cement/concrete by loading up tons 1/2" gravel around the drain assembly. If the weep holes get plugged the water that gets into the pan will not drain properly and you will discover problems shortly thereafter!

Thanks Mark - I added a picture. Thanks to your help I will glue part 1 and the pour cement it the excavated area! Then on to the proper pan with PVC liner
