I have an 1982 Borg Warner (York) 2 stage gas furnace with R W C Y terminals. I want to be able to set thermostat to "fan" and have only the fan run. How can I do this?

So if I run a wire from this G post to the G post on my thermostat I should be able to run the fan? What do I do with the black wire currently connected to the G post?

Running a third wire from the t-stat to the furnace isn't going to be easy. I also read that connecting a wire from the G post to the R post will run the fan. Tried it but it didn't work.

Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? I'm trying to spread the heat from our wood stove throughout the house and our forecast is for ten below zero Sunday night.

Many of those controls you pictured marked with the number L4064A, have either a switch you can slide to turn the fan on or a white button sticking out of the cover. If it has the white button, simply push the button in. That should turn on the fan.

Edit: Yours does not have the button. May or may not have the switch but I couldn't see it in the picture.

Thank you for taking time to reply. I couldn't find a button or switch. Would it help to take a picture from a different vantagepoint?

Maybe if you pop the cover off the L4064 & take a picture of the wiring it will be of some help.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I don't understand why the fan didn't come on when you jumped R&G unless either the relay is bad or the fan is not wired to it. Did you hear a click or snap when you jumped R&G? Is the fan belt driven?

Yes, it is belt driven. I visually checked all the wires goingg to the motor. All appear to be sound. When jumping R and G I had the breaker turned off. But when I turned it back on there was no click.

In looking at the pictures again, it appears the transformer is only a transformer with no fan relay. To verify open the 4x4 junction box upon which the transformer is mounted. If there is no relay, you aren't going to get the fan to come on via the G terminal.

The black wires from the board go into the box and attach to the back side of the plastic connectors as shown.

Here is a picture of the inside of the box. I have no idea what I'm looking at but hope it makes sense to you.

I don't see any kind of relay. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to replace the L4064 with one with a white, manual 'fan on' button. This still wouldn't let you turn the fan on with the thermostat but you could turn it on manually. Another option would be to replace the transformer with a 'fan center' which includes a transformer & fan relay. Still, to turn the fan on via the thermostat, you would need to pull another wire.

I've decided to add a fan center. I'm also going to buy a new thermostat because the current one doesn't support a two stage furnace. I have a few questions:

1. Any recommendation on the kind of fan center to buy? I've done some searching and am totally confused.

2. If I change to a two stage t-stat, will this dictate the kind of fan center I should get?

3. Do I need to do anything with the L4064 when I add the fan center?

First let me ask why you want a stat which supports a 2 stage furnace? Your furnace, I'm sure, is not two stage.

I don't believe you will need to do anything to the L4064.
Either the Honeywell R8285B1053 or White Rodgers 90-113 fan centers would work.

I think it is two stage based on the info plate on the furnace. If it is two stage, is this better than one stage? What I've Googled seems to say it is.

I see where it says "2 stage heat" but find it very hard to believe a furnace of that vintage would be two stage. Can you supply a larger picture of the gas valve or any information printed on it such as make & model?
