An exam can only tell if you didn't have sex - by an intact hymen.
But a broken hymen doesn't mean you did have sex, because it can break on it's own.
Unless you had sex within hours of a visual exam and show a certain amount of redness/normal bruising inside the labia, then no, no one can know. If you have a swab for STDs along with the PAP smear, and you test positive for a disease that can only be transmitted sexually, then the cat is out of the bag. And lastly, if you are pregnant enough weeks to test positive for that too, more cats out of the bag.
Your mother is a wise mother. If you were using condoms, they have a high failure rate. If you weren't using anything - let's just hope.
