New Computer
Dear Ask Me Help Desk,
How could I speed up the process of having my Father buy me a new computer? He said
That he needed to do more shopping for a better price. Also, the sets seem to be more
Versatile and cost less. I wrote his Wife and she said that he was looking but needed more time. Also, everything will be included: The screen, keyboard, unit, printer, inks and speakers.
The reason for a new computer, is because my old one is not functioning properly. It is slow, and the printer jammed on it. A new printer was bought, but it required Windows 98SE, and mine is only 98. This printer was returned. Dad said my current computer is inadequate because of this and a new system is cheaper than buying a new printer for the old computer.
Love,
Ronald Gordon

My suggestion would be to start earning some money toward your new computer. If you earn lets say 100$ and tell your dad what's its for he will see that your willing to do what it takes to get ahead.

I'm not sure what Country you live in, but take a look at the prices of "base unit" computers.
I bought a copy of MicroMart this week and I was stunned by how cheap some of them are - here's an example from one of the ads:
Power Cracker Tower System £189.95
* Black and Silver ATX midi Tower case
o 400W PSU
o 2 front USB2.0, mic and out audio ports
o 4 front 5.25" bays
o 2 front 3.5" bays
* Motherboard: ASUS M2N8-VMX Socket AM2
o chipset: nVidia GeForce 6100 + nForce 405
o 4x DDR2 Sockets max. 4GB DDR2 800/667/533 (Dual channel memory architecture)
o slots: 1x PCI Express for graphics; 2x PCI; 1x PCI Express
o 6-channel audio
o 1x IDE ATA-133 and 2 SATA II 3Gb/s (RAID 0, RAID 1)
o built-in 10/100/1000 LAN
o 4x USB2 rear ports
o Integrated nVidia GeForce 6100 3D graphics card (up to 128MB)
o 2x PS/2 ports for Mouse and Keyboard; 1x Serial; 1x Parallel
* AMD Sempron64 3200+ CPU, with heatsink and fan
* Kingston 512MB DDR2 667 PC2-5300 240-pin
* 80GB SATA II Hard Drive
* 16x DVD-ROM Drive
* Default case dimensions: W 187mm 7" 3/8 - D 432mm 17" - H 432mm 17"
* 2 Years Parts and Labour Warranty (Return To Base - free collect and return)
Floppy Disk Drive, Monitor and Operating System Software (i.e. Windows) not included as standard.
Special offer: upgrade from DVD-ROM drive to full DVD Rewriter for only £10!
£190.. thats $373 US Dollars.
I couldn't build a machine for less than that.
Buying a base unit means that you get no Operating System with the machine, so assuming that you're not going to run a pirated copy of Windows you'll have to install a free operating system to keep costs down - a Linux O.S such as Ubuntu would do the trick.
Or alternatively you might buy an "OEM" version of Windows which is about half the price, but you don't get any extras like customer support.

Oh, and beware of used computer shops!
I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but in the UK prices for decrepid old machines are ridiculously high - £100 for a 1000mhz pentium III running WindowsME? Rip off.
