A skater with a mass of 100kg is traveling East at 5m/s when he collides with another skater of mass 50kg heading North at 10m/s. The 100kg skater goes off at 6m/s E 45 degrees North after the collision.

What velocity (speed and direction) does the 50kg skater go off in after the collision?

I guess the 50kg skater goes off at 45 degrees as well but I'm not sure what equations to use to determine what the velocity will be. Ive tried breaking down components to vectors but my answer will not match up.

You can use conservation of momentum principles. In the east direction the initial momentum of the system is 100Kg x 5 m/s, and after the collision you know that the bigger skater's east momentum is 100 Kg x 6 m/s x cos(45). So the smaller skater's east momentum after the collision is 100 x 5 - 100 x 6 x cos(45). Divide this by his mass to get his east velocity. Now do the same calculation for north momentum. Post back with your results and we'll check it for you.
