Electric Water Heater - Water too hot
Recently, our water heater has been consistently 'tripping' the internal breaker on it's thermostat. After detecting the lack of hot water and resetting the thermostat, it takes about 24-36 hours before the breaker trips again. The water, when the heater is on seems very hot, hotter than usual, but I do not have empirical data to provide. I understand that the breaker will trip if the water gets too hot.

Background: The water heater is approx. 35 years old (it's in a cabin, which doesn't get a lot of use). We replaced both elements 3-4 years ago, but the thermostat looks to be original. We have not changed the thermostat temp. setting... ever. During the winter months, we completely drain the heater. On at least one occasion, the heater was turned on before the tank was filled, but I've never noticed any effects (unless this is an effect).

It is either the thermostat and/or the elements... but if it is likely one versus the other - I'd rather direct my attention there.

    Appreciate any/all help. Thanks

    Hi Pinecabin

There are a number of different tests that you can try if you are handy with an electrical tester, but even then, when this exact circumstance pops up even we must sometimes simply replace a part and see if it resolves the issue.

In this case, it sounds like you have a defective thermostat and since they are usually only about $10.00 a piece (top and bottom) AND you have recently replaced the elements I would suggest swapping out the thermostats... shouldn't take a 1/2 -1 hour max... ;)
