F1 OPT to H1 tax questions
I was on OPT from 01/17/2006 to 01/10/2006 after that I was on H1 B visa. I make less than 100K. I have around $300 from interest income.

    Should I fill 1040NR-EZ form?

Do I have to fill out separate forms for the time on OPT and time on H1?

Is the tax rate different for OPT v/s H1?

Should I pay SSN tax from October to December (it was not withheld by employer)?

I had around 10K in sign on bonus, it should be taxed more than base pay, how do I report that on the tax form

Am I eligible for standard deductions?

I wish someone would have answered your questions! We have a lot of the same doubts and I'm so confused. My employer didn't withhold taxes after October 1st either.

I was under an F-1 student visa for the first three months of 2006. Then I received my OPT and worked for the rest of the year without paying Social Security or Medicare taxes. However I applied for my H1-B work visa and obtained it (valid after October 1st). So for the last three months of 2006 I was under H1-B visa:

I actually called the IRS (and after hours on hold) they told me I have to fill out forms 1040NR-EZ and form 8843.

Have you had any luck since you posted this?

    Rasotas:

You must file Form 1040NR. Though you did not have to pay taxes on the interest, you must account for it on page 5 of Form 1040NR.

Do not forget the Form 8843.

You do NOT pay the non-withheld SSN or Mediacre taxes. That is the employer's problem, not yours.

File JUST the Form 1040NR; tax rates are the same between H-1B and F-1 (OPT).

The bonus is part of your wage and should be on the W-2.

If you are an Indian, then you can claim the standard deduction.

    Dfrewa:

You can file Form 1040NR-EZ if you have no interest income.
